Representative Payees
How to Change a Representative Payee
By Ronnie Shaw, SSA Advocate · March 9, 2026
A representative payee manages Social Security benefits for someone who needs help handling payments. Changing a payee can become necessary when the current arrangement is not working.
Situations that may lead to a change
- Concerns about how funds are being used
- A beneficiary’s living situation changes
- The current payee can no longer serve
- Accounting or communication problems with SSA
Important note
Representative payee disputes can involve both SSA rules and very specific facts. Each situation should be reviewed individually.
How advocacy can help
Ronnie can help you understand the process, organize documents, and communicate with SSA when properly appointed — with careful attention to the beneficiary’s needs and the facts of the case.
