A disability denial can feel final, but it often is not the end of the process. Many claims move through one or more appeal stages, and deadlines are critical.
Why denials happen
SSA may deny a claim for many reasons, including insufficient medical evidence, work activity findings, or a determination that the impairment does not meet the agency’s disability standard. Understanding the notice is the first step.
The appeal path (in general)
Not every case goes through every stage, but the common sequence is:
- Initial application
- Reconsideration
- Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge
- Appeals Council
- Federal court
